Plog: Cape Adare … The World’s Largest Adélie Penguin Colony

After visiting Borchgrevink’s Hut (post here) on Cape Adare, our landing was far from over.  We were at the world’s largest Adélie penguin colony, and we were going to walk amongst the thousands of penguins that remained ashore even though it was well past the breeding season and most of them had already dispersed to go foraging.

To and fro … to and fro the Adélies go along the penguin highway from their nests to the sea and back … again and again they go.

We took a tour today to the Magellanic penguin rookery — 5,500 nests; approximately 15,000 individuals — on Isla Martillo.  We chose to go with PiraTour, the only company licensed to land on the island and take visitors for a walk amongst the penguins.  As a bonus, we also saw gentoo and king penguins.

And a few bonus Magellanic chick photos … because they are so darn cute ;-)
