Wednesday — August 26It all started with an email from United Airlines (UA) reminding me that my frequent flyer miles — all 57,200 of them — would be expiring on 11/30/2009. Can't have that now, can we?
We immediately set about researching award ticket availability. We weren't too particular about the destination — free ticket, after all — but our choices were limited by the number of miles we had. We also needed to consider existing commitments at work. Once we determined that the best time to get away would be the end of August/beginning of September, the weather came into play as well — neither of us wanted to go somewhere where it would be sweltering. Final decision: Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies.
Since UA does not fly into Jasper, we got tickets to Edmonton, a four-hour drive from the park. With e-ticket confirmations in hand, we turned our attention to accommodations. We considered B&Bs, home-stays, hotels, and lodges. We even threw the possibility of RV’ing into the mix. In the end, we reserved a deluxe one bedroom cabin at the Alpine Village, a resort located a little more than a mile outside the Jasper townsite.
That was in May; it's now late August. Tomorrow, we leave on our second trip to the Canadian Rockies. The first time (July 2007), we focused on the Banff/Lake Louise area; we had a terrific time. This time, we plan on sticking around the Jasper area — hiking; communing with nature; sighting wildlife; relaxing on the porch of our cabin; grilling on the barbecue — all of these activities are on our agenda.
“Two to Travel” goes off to Canada.
We have a "fluid" itinerary planned. With the exception of travel days, we don't have a schedule to follow. That's not to say that we don't have plenty of ideas to fill each day to the fullest. We'll just make decisions as we go along.
